Rediscovered Work - 1970s
I recently unearthed a number of sketches I made while vacationing in the early 1970s with my family on Cape Cod. These sketches were all made with a Bic ballpoint pen in a spiral bound sketch pad. I was surprised that the work had survived many moves and careless handling, but nevertheless they did.
Given their age, the sketches were in pretty bad shape - some had water or coffee stains on them; others were deteriorating. I scanned the sketches into digital format to archive them for posterity and am sharing them with you here. These sketches bring back many fond memories of summers past.
A funny footnote: I had just completed a marathon project for Best Foods and was finally going to take a much-needed and well-earned vacation with my family. I had admonished my staff in New York City not to disturb me for any reason while I was away. We had rented a small saltbox cottage from Wind & Wave in North Truro on Cape Cod. There was no telephone in the cottage, and, of course, this was in the days before cell phones. One hot and humid, lazy afternoon I was lounging in the sun and sand behind the cottage enjoying the view of Cape Cod Bay (and sketching, of course). The sound of a lone, sputtering prop airplane disturbed this bucolic setting. Back and forth the plane flew overhead until I finally looked up and saw that the trailing banner read: "ANDY - CALL YOUR OFFICE!"
